In this interview, Psychedelic Vantage had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Deborah Mash, a pioneer in Ibogaine research. In the interview, we explore the potential Ibogaine has for treating addiction, traumatic brain injury, PTSD, and depression.
Dr. Deborah Mash is a trailblazer in Ibogaine research, globally recognized for her groundbreaking contributions. As a leading expert in this psychoactive compound, she is also the Founder and CEO of DemeRx, a pharmaceutical company dedicated to unlocking the potential of Ibogaine and noribogaine for addiction treatment. Let’s delve into Dr. Mash’s remarkable journey, her extensive research, and the promising future she envisions for Ibogaine in addressing mental health challenges.
Dr. Mash’s neuroscience journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Florida State University in 1975. She later earned her Ph.D. in neuropharmacology and neuroscience from the University of Miami in 1984, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship with Harvard Medical School. In 1986, she became a professor at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine, contributing significantly to the field and founding the university’s brain bank.
In 2010, Dr. Mash took a pivotal step by founding DemeRx, where she initially served as the Chief Strategy Officer before becoming the CEO in 2017. DemeRx focuses on developing Ibogaine and noribogaine as potential treatments for addiction, reflecting Dr. Mash’s commitment to translating her research into tangible therapeutic solutions.
Dr. Mash’s involvement with Ibogaine spans over two decades, starting around 1990 when she became acquainted with the substance during her study of coca-ethylene and addiction. Fascinated by Ibogaine’s anti-addiction potential, she initiated groundbreaking research. In 1994, Dr. Mash and Dr. Juan Sanchez-Ramos secured FDA approval for the first-ever study on Ibogaine, exploring its efficacy in treating cocaine addiction through Phase 1 and Phase 2 trials.
A significant milestone in Dr. Mash’s journey was the establishment of the Healing Visions Ibogaine Clinic on St. Kitts Island in 1995. Over its operation until 2003, the clinic treated over 300 patients, challenging traditional addiction treatment success rates. Dr. Mash noted that 40% to 50% of patients remained clean after treatment, a stark contrast to conventional programs.
In a 1996 interview, Dr. Mash expressed a vision for Ibogaine beyond Schedule 1 restrictions, advocating for its mainstream medical use. She emphasized the need for collaboration among academia, public, and private sectors to move Ibogaine into Schedule 2, enabling broader access to its potential benefits.
Through research, Dr. Mash and her colleagues discovered noribogaine, Ibogaine’s principal metabolite. They hypothesized that noribogaine plays a crucial role in sustaining Ibogaine’s anti-addictive effects, suggesting its potential use in aftercare and maintenance. Dr. Mash envisions a pharmaceutical version of noribogaine to enhance treatment success and address post-treatment challenges like anxiety and cravings.
Dr. Deborah Mash’s tireless dedication to Ibogaine research and addiction treatment significantly contributes to our understanding of this psychoactive compound. As the CEO of DemeRx, she is committed to translating research findings into practical solutions for individuals grappling with addiction. Dr. Mash remains a beacon of hope, driving Ibogaine towards mainstream recognition and potential therapeutic applications.
